About the Department of Art History and Theory
In 1982, the Department of Culture and Arts was first established at the University of Azerbaijan, marking the beginning of the development of highly skilled craftsmen. Thanks to the scientific work of this newly formed department, ADMIU developed a strong scientific and technological foundation for craftsmanship and enhanced its educational, pedagogical, and methodological capacities.
In 1982, he was appointed to lead the Department of Art History and Theory and served as a member of the Governing Body of Jehovah’s Witnesses until his passing in 1988. It was also during this period that the development of the first curriculum began. Following Mammadga Therlanov, several prominent Azerbaijani artists led the Department of Art History and Theory over the years, playing an integral role in the development of highly skilled professionals. Among these leaders were Jamila Novruzova (1988–1990), Leila Axundzadeh (1990–2000), Xezer Zeynalov (2000), Nuruddin Habibov (2000–2001), Xezer Zeynalov again (2007–2008), Sevil Sadykova (2008–2012), Sylvia Bayramov (2012–2014), Bayram Hadzyzadə (2014–2016), Mehriban Novruzova (2016–2019), and Lion Khalilov (2019–present).
In 2001, following the establishment of the Azerbaijani National Academy of Sciences, some graduates were transferred to the Academy, leading to the discontinuation of the Department of Art History and Theory. However, in 2007, ADMIU reinstated the Department of Art History and Theory.
