The department was established in 1959 under the title “Cultural and Educational Work.” Following structural reforms, it was renamed the Department of Culturology in 2012 and, since 2018, has operated as the Department of Socio-Cultural Activities.
Over the years, the department’s academic staff have published numerous extensive scholarly works, including monographs, textbooks, teaching manuals, curricula, methodological guides, and research articles. Among these publications are History and Theory of Culture, International Cultural Relations, Cultural Relations between Azerbaijan and Arab Countries, Communication Culture, Cultural Heritage, Information Culture, Gender Issues in Azerbaijan: Formation and Development Characteristics, Manifestations of Gender in Culture and Art, Gender Relations in the Socio-Cultural Life of Medieval Azerbaijan, The Role of Gender in Society, and the monograph Nineteenth-Century Azerbaijani Enlightenment: Society and the Individual.
Today, the department offers nearly 130 courses at undergraduate and graduate levels, including humanities subjects, professional specialization courses, and field-specific training disciplines. The curriculum is designed to equip students with the theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and analytical competencies necessary to address both standard and non-standard issues within various areas of social and cultural activity.
