The Department of Mugham Art has been operating since 2001 at Azerbaijan State University of Culture and Arts. Over the years, the department has brought together prominent representatives of Azerbaijani mugham performance, including People’s Artists Aghakhan Abdullayev, Islam Rzayev, Gandab Guliyeva, and Zumrud Mammadova. From 2011 to 2018, the department was headed by People’s Artist and Professor Janan Akbarov. Since 2018, the department has been led by People’s Artist and Associate Professor Teyyub Aslanov.
The department’s academic activity is focused on preserving and transmitting the authentic traditions of Azerbaijani mugham to younger generations. Alongside Mugham Performance, students also study related disciplines such as Gaval Performance and Aruz Prosody. Following the inscription of Azerbaijani mugham on UNESCO’s list of the “Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity” in 2006, the department has actively contributed to the teaching, research, and promotion of mugham art through academic publications, lecture-concerts, and artistic events dedicated to the Azerbaijani musical heritage.
