Since 3 March 2025, the Department has been headed by Associate Professor Afshan Shafiyeva, PhD in History.
Although the Theatre Institute was established in 1945 on the basis of the Baku Theatre School, it was initially impossible to create a dedicated department in this field; therefore, humanities and socio-political subjects were taught by lecturers invited from other higher education institutions. Functioning as an independent department since 1966, the unit has operated under various titles due to structural reforms. Since 1995, it has been known as the Department of Social and Political Sciences.
