In 2000, the Departments of Film Studies and, in 2005, Literary Creativity and Screenwriting commenced their activities at Azerbaijan State University of Culture and Arts (ASUCA).

  In 2015, these two departments were merged under the title Department of Film Studies. In 2017, by the decision of the University’s Academic Council and taking into account the graduating specializations, the department was renamed the Department of Film Studies and Screenwriting. The department is headed by Honoured Artist, Professor Ali Amirli.
